From the archive, first published Wednesday 26th Jan 2000.

RENAULT has launched three new Clio 'Collections' - Freeway, Elegance and Sport - to target different customers, including a new model from Renaultsport.

The range comes with lower prices, new equipment on every model and a new range of engines - 1.4 16-valve, 1.6-litre 16-valve, 2.0-litre 16-valve petrol and 1.9dTi diesel.

Every model, is lower priced than its predecessor - except the lead-in Liberté which at £7,995 remains the same - following in the tradition of all recent Renault launches.

Ten different trim levels of the Clio 2000 range being grouped into three 'Collections' - Freeway, Elegance and Sport, the range offers a choice of models with specific benefits and specific standard equipment.

Renault says the Freeway Collection is aimed at first time and young buyers or those looking for a second car.

The Elegance Collection offers large car luxury, while the Sport Collection offers a range of sporty Clios with power levels ranging from 75 horsepower to a Renaultsport tuned 172 horsepower.

Another new model to the Clio range, the Clio Sport 1.4, is the first model in a complete new sporting line-up.

Since its launch in the UK in April 1998, the New Clio has enjoyed a sales success that shows no sign of letting up.

In addition to selling more than 100,000 cars in the UK by the end of 1999, the New Clio became the best-seller on the European small car market last year, passing the milestone of the millionth car produced less than two years after its launch.

During 1999, the New Clio not only confirmed its position as leader of the small saloon segment, with a 21.2 per cent share, but also of the European market, where it captured a 10.6 per cent share, ahead of the Opel Corsa (9.8 per cent) and the Peugeot 206 (9.7 per cent).

Clio also set a new record of 63,991 sales in the UK making it the seventh best-seller overall, number one in Northern Ireland and number two in Scotland (behind Mégane which was the top-seller.)
