Motorists put lives at risk

From the archive, first published Thursday 11th Mar 2004.

Drivers have been criticised by a Wallingford resident for turning a zebra crossing into a `death trap'.

The crossing was installed in Station Road last year after pleas from Wallingford Town Council and local people.

But Hawthorn Close resident Ann Southwood said: "I have lost count of the number of times that cars fly by and have no intention of stopping.

"Twice I have been in the middle of the crossing when a car whizzed by me.

"It is a death trap and it will not be long before there is a serious accident or fatality."

County Council area engineer Brian Short said: "We have received complaints and we will go and inspect the crossing to check whether it has been installed properly. It may be that we need extra warning signs."
