Zidane — a 21st Century Portrait

Several of this week's new releases pursue their subjects in such unrelenting close-up that it's sometimes difficult to gain a true perspective. Take, for example, Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno's Zidane - A 21st Century Portrait, for example. This much-anticipated documentary follows footballer Zindine Zidane for the duration of a La Liga game between Real Madrid and Villareal in April 2005. Technically, it draws attention to itself far too often with its tricksy shifts between camera angles and distances, but, as a study in sporting concentration and an avant-garde experiment in spatial disorientation, it's pretty damn impressive.  more...

World Trade Center

Oliver Stone, a filmmaker well acquainted with controversy, swallows his usual political bile to craft this harrowing tribute to the men and women of the emergency services who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, in New York City. Faced with so many heartbreaking stories of courage and sacrifice that autumn day, Stone and screenwriter Andrea Berloff focus their attention in World Trade Center on the true experiences of two families, whose lives are forever changed by attacks on the Twin Towers.  more...

The Insider

Oxford East city councillor Stephen Tall is living proof that at least someone listens to what a Liberal Democrat has to say, being as he was, the recipient of his party's 'best blog award' at their conference in Brighton last week. On accepting the honour for his online rant on national and local politics, Mr Tall said: "Lib Dem blogs show what a lively bunch of folk we liberals can be. For those of the media who tediously insist on trying to pigeonhole the Lib Dems as either right-wing or left-wing, the Lib Dem blogs are an insistent, daily reminder that we're neither. We're liberals."  more...

Gray Matter

Why Leonard Woolf mattered to me

Leonard Woolf died at the age of 88 on my 18th birthday, August 14, 1969. Did his passing register with me at the time? To be honest, I can't remember - perhaps not, amid the celebrations involved in this very special day for me. Coming across the date in Victoria Glendinning's wonderful new biography of Woolf, however, I paused to ponder the fact that a man who had already had some influence in my life should have departed the scene precisely as I was embarking on adulthood.  more...

Oxford Sinfonia: University Church

Oxford Sinfonia opened its new season on Saturday with a beautifully balanced programme of pieces by Beethoven, Haydn and Strauss, demonstrating once again what a versatile and proficient orchestra this is. Beethoven's Coriolanus and Prometheus were symmetrically placed at the beginning of each half, the former treated with appropriate passion and dramatic appreciation, the latter drawing a fine contrast between those early running quavers and the lyrical warmth of the second theme. Conductor William Carslake made sure we were allowed to appreciate the full brilliance and inventiveness of Beethoven's scores, with two masterful displays of precision, intensity and total commitment.  more...
