Cinema

What's coming our way in 2007

It always takes something akin to a leap of blind faith to follow The Oxford Times's review of the movie year with a preview of forthcoming attractions. All the gloom of the retrospective has to give way to optimism for a bright new year - even though you have more than an inkling that this gush of anticipation is little more than a first draft of next December's annual lament for another 12 months of wasted opportunities and declining standards.  more...

Food

Toad in the hole made with local ingredients, including beer. Serves four

By buying local sausages, Wessex flour, free- range local eggs and a bottle of Old Hooky, brewed at Hook Norton Brewery, the only ingredients in this dish that are not local are the milk and seasonings. By adding beer to a batter, you are adding a certain lightness, thanks to the yeast in the beer which helps produce a light, fluffy texture. For this recipe, I have replaced half the required amount of milk with beer. More beer can be added instead of milk if you wish.  more...

Fine new deli proves its green credentials

An enterprising young couple aim to put local food on the map. Chris and Paul St John Cox fixed the point of a compass on 31 Walton Street where their new deli is situated, then drew a circle which marked out a 30-mile radius. This gave them the boundary within which they work in order to minimise food miles when buying their stock.  more...

Gray Matter

Why Blair is right to like the Gibbs

'How long before Robin Gibb becomes Sir Robin?" asked Ron Kent, of Malaga, Spain, in a letter last Friday to the Editor of the Daily Telegraph. Before attempting to answer this question, I shall digress momentarily to point out how many of the Torygraph's readers address their missives from outside the country. Of a recent quartet of top-of-the-page letters on some topic of Little Englander concern, I was amused to observe that no fewer than three were posted in France.  more...

What rubbish from the city's waste team

Though I consider myself to be of moderate intelligence, I find I am utterly confused by the timetable for refuse collections drawn up by Oxford City Council. From my observation of my neighbours' conduct, I know I am far from alone in this. My understanding of the arrangements over Christmas was not helped by the council leaflet, shown above. It seemed to make no sense, or, at any rate, to have its meaning so shrouded in verbiage ("as per" - twice!) that it would have served well as a comprehension test to be set by our resident puzzler Chris Maslanka.  more...
