CRICKET: Rivals paired again

OXFORD and Henley will do battle again in the Cockspur Cup after being drawn together in the second round.

The Oxfordshire rivals will meet at Henley's Brakspear ground on Sunday, May 13 after being handed byes in the first round.

It's a repeat of last year's clash when the pair met in the third round at Roman Way with Oxford winning by 16 runs.

Abingdon Vale, of The Oxford Times Cherwell League Division 2, have entered the competition for the first time.

They will face Home Counties Premier League Division 2 West side Beaconsfield at Hales Meadow in round one on Sunday, April 29.

The prize for the winners is a trip to Brentham or Farnham Royal.

Captain Ed Tilley said Abingdon's venture into the competition was aimed at improving the standard of cricket at the club.

Thame Town are at home to Challow & Childrey in another Oxfordshire derby, while Kidlington visit Burnham.

The winners of the Thame and Challow tie entertain Reading, while Home Counties Premier League champions Slough will visit either Burnham or Kidlington.

Banbury have a bye through to the second round where they will be at home to Ombersley, from Worcestershire, or Sutton Coldfield.

The seven Oxfordshire sides are among an entry of 397 clubs - an increase of 12 per cent - who will be chasing a spot in the final at Lord's

1st round (April 29): Abingdon Vale v Beaconsfield, Burnham v Kidlington, Thame Tn v Challow & Childrey.

2nd round (May 13): Brentham or Farnham Royal v Abingdon Vale or Beaconsfield, Burnham or Kidlington v Slough, Henley v Oxford, Thame Tn or Challow & Childrey v Reading, Banbury v Ombersley or Sutton Coldfield.
