Flooding: council assists householders

From the Abingdon Herald, first published Tuesday 24th Jul 2007.

Teams from Oxford City Council are tonight out in flood-hit west Oxford, supporting those householders most at risk.

Sandbags have been delivered to homes in West Street, Earl Street, and along Botley Road.

The council is also working in Wolvercote.

A city council spokesman said: "This emphasises that the River Thames is still on a severe flood warning.

"Our street wardens will continue to patrol the Botley Road, Grandpont, Donnington Bridge and New Hinksey tonight.

"They will provide reassurance to residents and co-ordinate with other teams if the situation develops.

"Residents should continue to be vigilant and monitor the Environment Agency website for further updates.

For details on road closures, residents should refer to Oxfordshire County Council's website for more information.

If you live in one of these areas and need general flooding information, call the floodline on 0845 9881188.

Oxford City Council tenants can phone 0800 227676 for help with tenancy issues.

Advice

If your home is affected by flooding, try to arrange to stay with friends or family.

If this is not possible, food and shelter are available at the Kassam Stadium, you should take bedding and essential medication with you. Oxford City Council has Estate Managers on duty at the Stadium to assist residents.

If you do need to leave your property lock it as usual to make it secure and turn off gas and electricity supplies. If you are an Oxford City Council tenant and vacating your house please call 0800 227676 and let us know.

Oxford City Council is working as normally as possible but is asking residents to be patient.
