Stella Vine, Modrn Art, Oxford

Visit Modern Art Oxford during the next few weeks and you will discover that the conceptual work which normally fills the galleries is not there. Instead, the highly coloured, accessible, figurative work of Stella Vine stares down from every wall. But is it as accessible as it first appears? What are those large eyes that gaze out from the picture with such intensity- some dripping with paint to suggest mascara-stained tears - really trying to say? Are these staring eyes in agony, or simply Vine's way of exposing the mirror of the soul?  more...

Fitting climax for Harry

by Emily Shelly HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS J. K. Rowling (Bloomsbury, £17.99)Bringing off a fitting climax to the most successful book series of all time is a tall order, but one that J.K. Rowling takes in her storytelling stride. Deathly Hallows is darker, scarier, more complex and more action-packed than any of the other Potter books. As well as concluding all that has gone before, it even manages to bring off a mystery plot of its own.  more...

Paperback choice

Homo Britannicus Chris Stringer (Penguin, £8.99) For a long perspective on the flooding that hit Oxfordshire this week, take a journey with Stringer, who looks at the earliest human occupation of Britain 700,000 years ago, following our struggle for survival as the climate changed. He combines geology, biological anthropology, archaeology, palaeontology and meteorology to show how our lifestyle is intertwined with global temperature fluctuations. We learn that some early humans would have seen hippos swimming up the Thames to what is now Trafalgar Square, while at other times a great ice-sheet engulfed the area. At least seven times, early Britons apparently failed to cope with climate change and died out completely. He concludes: "If we can face the challenges of global warming together, we can look to a new and more hopeful future... it is now up to every one of us to do something about it if humans everywhere are not to share the fate of Homo britannicus, who were unable to cope with their changing world."  more...

Eleven credited screenwriters, over two years of rewrites and polishes to more than 100 script drafts, and it comes to this: mediocrity. Raymond Blanc menu for fascinating TV

Ironically, no one taught Oxfordshire's Michelin-starred chef Raymond Blanc how to cook, yet he now spends much of his time teaching others. Not for him a famous mentor. Everything this celebrated chef learnt, when he began cooking in a commercial kitchen, he discovered through his own blunders, failures, frustrations and hardships. It was his single-minded determination to succeed that lifted him out of the kitchen at the Rose Revived, at Newbridge, where he began his career as a chef, and into Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons, where he has has remained at the top of the game for almost three decadestell H..  more...

Tubular belles please bees

VAL BOURNE admires the variety and resilience of penstemons Any visit to a garden centre or nursery is certain to yield some penstemons, and their spikes of tubular flowers, designed to please the bees, can really lift the garden in July, August and September. There's a terrific variety of flower colour and shape, from clean white to almost black, and trumpets also vary from slender to snub-nosed. Foliage differs from bright-green to dark as do heights, because border penstemons are bred from a mixture of American species. Seventy of these are found in Utah alone and native Indians used them medicinally for alleviating pains and healing wounds.  more...

NHS vandals

A vigil in St Mary's Church, Banbury, to save The Horton Hospital (Oxford Mail, July 25) was highly commendable, perhaps, but it is unlikely to bring the God-influenced change of heart the well-meaning defenders might hope for.  more...

What on earth?

Sir, I am writing initially apropos the article (Herald, July 12) referring to the 'black v white' poem. I feel it is a great pity the lady in question cannot be liberal in her views over such a storm in a teacup - "He should resign" indeed. What on earth is the world coming to? It's this sort of attitude that inflames racism.  more...

Woodstock Music Society, St Mary Magdalene Church

There were several empty seats among the choir's ranks last weekend, as members of the Woodstock Music Society fell victim to flooding and road closures. I was told that the tenor section was particularly depleted, with only five instead of the usual 11. Worse still, the tenor soloist, Ian Barratt, was also unable to get through, and it was too late to find a replacement. But those who had made it soldiered on gallantly, and in the end the depleted numbers and resulting imbalance of voices was scarcely noticeable.  more...

The Seasons, Royal Albert Hall

Leaving flood-alert Oxford on Monday afternoon for the Proms performance of The Seasons, it was hard to prophesy whether Haydn's cheery pastoral epic would prove to be a singularly unfortunate coincidence of repertoire (planned as it was, no doubt, several years ago), or whether it was going to provide moral uplift. A series of problems en route, culminating in a late, rain-drenched arrival at the Royal Albert Hall did not improve the outlook.  more...

Richard Thompson's Sweet Warrior CD review

Those fortunate enough to have been at the Ascott-under-Wychwood music festival last year witnessed one of Richard Thompson's finest performances. Alone, with just a guitar and a glorious Cotswold sunset as a backdrop, he sang, uncannily, a new ballad, Sunset Song - I know he is prolific but surely he can't write that quickly. Soon it was followed by another new composition, Dad's Gonna Kill Me. Only the year before he had released the somewhat experimental Front Parlour Ballads, but here he was performing songs from another collection. If these were indicative of what was to come, we knew we were in for something special, and Sweet Warrior (Proper Records) is precisely that. It is without doubt the best album he is made since the Capitol years of the early nineties, of Rumour and Sigh and Mirror Blue, that produced two of his greatest songs - Beeswing and 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. War stirs the greatest songwriters to put pen to paper and Thompson has not expressed such raw emotion since Shoot Out the Lights. Dad's Gonna Kill Me takes its title from the US soldiers' shortened name for Baghdad, in the same way Vietnam was known as Nam - "Sitting targets in the wild west show, Nobody loves me here". And war of a different kind is the theme of the seven-minute epic Guns are the Tongues that seems to drain every emotional tissue from his playing and his voice. While fiery electric guitar predominates, stirring ballads stand out too. Apart from Sunset Song, Take Care the Road You Choose and She Sang Angels to Rest - strings and all - will, I'm sure, be among fans' favourites in years to come. And for good measure he turns his hand to reggae with Francesca - which means freedom in Italian - and whose lyrics echo a theme of the album - "Who dragged her name through the dirt".  more...
