Minister in a muddle

Having read that Home Secretary Jacqui Smith smoked cannabis when she was in Oxford, I am wondering what she was smoking, and where she was when she wrote to me in June, 2002, saying: "This Government has, however, already made available substantial resources to councils for social services, in particular between 1996/1997".  more...

Outstanding response to floods

Sir - We want to place on record our enormous appreciation for the fantastic way the people of Oxfordshire have been responding to the flooding crisis that has hit our county. Many communities have been affected and some of these will take some time to recover.  more...

Reassuring care during floods

Sir - As comparatively 'recent' arrivals in Abingdon - here only since 1988 - we wish to express our admiration and gratitude for the support and consideration we have received during the recent and on-going flood crisis! We are sure our experience has been widespread. For example: Emergency services: from the police with the initial timely alert; through the fire brigade relieving, with a submersible pump, the very threatening Ock flood here; to the local council employees delivering sandbags at 10.30pm last night - all have been simply tremendous.  more...

Save flood plain

Sir - Present floods along the Thames and its tributaries should teach us to preserve our flood plains. Thames Water want to build reservoir banks higher than a church tower and two miles north to south across tributaries to the River Ock. This would occupy the nine square kilometre triangle between Marcham, East Hanney and Steventon. This would surely impair natural drainage down the Vale of the White Horse, effectively damming water to the west and exacerbating flooding.  more...

No more dredging

Sir - I know you will probably have received many letters regarding the flooding and cause. I am sure that in the river valleys some of this flooding could not be helped.  more...

Fantastic job

Sir - Can I say a big thank you to the staff of BBC Radio Oxford.  more...

Tidy minds

Sir - I was one of those unfortunates living on the Causeway in Steventon to be flooded out on Friday evening. I was therefore delighted to see the Vale council was taking things so seriously.  more...

Cancel event?

Sir - With all the problems in the county due to flooding on Sunday, July 22, I was appalled by the attitude of the spokesman for the Fly to the Past event at Blenheim Palace that day.  more...

Hot air?

Sir - Dr Mike Lockwood, of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, has had published in the proceedings of the Royal Society journal, alleged findings that question the validity of the sun-spot argument as an alternative main primary cause for global warming and suggests his findings prove that global warming is mainly man-made.  more...

Welcome income

Sir - The AA is shocked at the 130 tickets a day issued to motorists flouting the city centre road barriers (Report, July 20).  more...

Scandalous affair

Sir - I am glad to see that the fortnightly bin collections will be reviewed in October (Report, July 20).  more...

Unwanted diktats

Sir - Mrs Mary Young, of Gosford & Water Eaton Parish Council, greatly understates the case when she writes: "It seems reasonable to assume that the Government may be attempting to form a future land bank around Oxford by stealth, as well as trying to dictate on planning decisions not wanted by the local electorate" (Letters, July 13).  more...

Comically unintelligible

Sir - In a letter last week, I mentioned the difficulties caused to foreign visitors by having two bus companies with different stops.  more...

Kick in the teeth

Sir - I hoped to avoid party politics during my year as Lord Mayor. But I must protest at the Lib Dem decision to close the popular sports centre in my own Littlemore ward.  more...

Smell the diesel

Sir - Huw Egginton makes the hilarious suggestion (Letters, July 20) that bicycles badly parked or belonging to red-light jumpers be donated to charity.  more...

Horrific proposal

Sir - Those of us who live in South Hinksey are, like John Goddard of Oxford City Council, horrified by the proposal to extract gravel from a site between Grandpont and the Hinkseys.  more...

Food festival was fun

Sir - I enjoyed the Children's Food Festival so much, that my Mum said I should write and tell you. It was really, really good.  more...
