Paperback choice

The Discomfort Zone: A Personal History Jonathan Franzen (Harper Perennial, £8.99) Readers of Franzen's novel The Corrections could not help wondering how much of the dysfunctional family story was autobiographical. Here he describes his Missouri childhood, the elaborate pranks that he and his friends orchestrated from the roof of his high school, his self-inflicted travails in selling his mother's house after her death, and the web of connections between his all-consuming marriage, the problem of global warming and the life lessons to be learned in watching birds.  more...

Behind the scenes of family life

If you thought that appearing on this page was just a rite of publicity passage for an author on their way to greater glory in national newspapers, think again. When I interviewed London-based Charlotte Mendelson, she said: "I'm proud that I've become successful enough to be interviewed by The Oxford Times. It does make me feel quite famous, actually." I laugh and think: she's only half-joking. It has something to do with having grown up here and the fact that her family gets the paper every week.  more...

Letters

Think again

Sir, I note with interest from the front page of the Wantage and Grove Herald (June 21) that planning permission has been refused for Madisons Tea Rooms to relocate to the empty site of the late-lamented bookshop in Newbury Street.  more...

Why so long for town's first Asbo?

Sir, Over the years, mainly through the Herald, I have raised various issues including that of the yob culture and vandalism in Didcot and the failings, in particular, of police in dealing with it (Asbo youth's pledge, Didcot Herald, June 28). If it is true this is the first Asbo in Didcot, one cannot help but ask why it has taken so long because: I believe Asbos were first introduced in April 1999 During this period onwards, in particular, the Broadway shops have been persistently vandalised over a period and also local residents have had their properties damaged, for example, having their walls kicked down People felt very intimidated to go on foot along the Broadway from late afternoon/early evening onwards due to the yob culture that was allowed to develop.  more...

Road idea

Sir, In reply to A B Beadle (Letters, The Herald, June 28), following my letters, on the subject of reversing the traffic flow in Abingdon, printed in The Herald on or around July 15 and 29, 2004, all I received was ridicule and abuse from what I have always assumed to be a name fronting for the local Liberal Democrats who were solely responsible for AbITS at the time. At a slightly later date, some councillor made a brief vague comment that it had been considered but didn't expand on that.  more...

Sad to read

Sir, I was saddened to read that local councillors are not supporting the proposed new school at Grove because it will not have its own sixth form.  more...

'Flies in face'

Sir, It seems that local Conservatives wish to turn the future of secondary education in Grove and Wantage into a political football. Let us be clear about the situation. There were three options considered by the county council cabinet, which all led to a school site in Grove. Option A was based on two separate schools in Wantage and Grove for 1,250 pupils, option B was for one school on two sites with a total of 2,500 pupils and option C was for a 600-place (11-16) school for Grove.  more...

Lib Dem success

Sir, I doubt that opposition pleas for understanding after losing the Vale elections so comprehensively will convince many residents ('Political chess', The Herald, June 21).  more...

'Delighted'

Sir, How saddening it was to read Tom Waterhouse's letter (The Herald, June 21) about the invitation to Dr Harris, our local MP, to St Edmund School's 150th anniversary celebrations.  more...

Flood defences

Sir, With the flooding in the north of England uppermost in the news why hasn't the waste ash from Didcot Power Station, which is destined for landfill, been seconded by the Government for flood defences.  more...
