CRICKET: Oxon have it all to do

From the Oxford Mail, first published Monday 9th Jul 2007.

Oxfordshire have it all to do after losing three quick wickets on the opening day of their Minor Counties Championship clash with Shropshire at Banbury.

After bowling the visitors out for 273, Oxon slumped to 46-3 at the close.

And once again it means that so much rests on the shoulders of star batsman Rob Williams.

Williams is four not out, but is likely to be crucial in determining his side's fate.

After losing the toss, Oxon made an early breakthrough courtesy of Keith Arnold.

But John Whitney and Rob Foster then shared a second-wicket stand of 87 to put Shropshire in control.

Although they lost wickets at regular intervals, they kept adding to their score.

Paul McMahon was Oxfordshire's best bowler, finishing with 6-114 off his 30 overs.

Oxon's innings got off to a bad start when Jamie Hewitt was superly caught at point for just one.

Simon Hole then dragged the ball onto his stumps, before Craig Haupt played all round a straight ball.
