Leader

Can do better

Oxfordshire's director of children, young people and families Janet Tomlinson pulled no punches in an interview with The Oxford Times this week. She is quite clear that schools across Oxfordshire are not performing as they should.  more...

Political arts

The suggestion that Oxford City Council should sell some of its historic works of art because they are offensive is quite ridiculous. We could just about understand the argument that they should be sold to raise money for the council - although the city's record on value for money suggests there are more pressing matters that deserve the attention of councillors.  more...

All at sea

We remain sceptical about Oxford City Council's plans for wind turbines in Oxford. We all want to see alternative forms of energy that reduce our carbon footprint, but solutions need to be practical.  more...

Hands off Britannia

Britannia has appeared on our coinage for more than 300 years, but now plans are afoot to replace it completely with more modern images reflecting what is good, but not necessarily great about Britain today.  more...

Shut this alleyway

Once again, the long-suffering residents of Windale Avenue at Blackbird Leys, Oxford, are forced to appeal through the Oxford Mail to Oxfordshire County Council to close an alleyway at the back of their homes, which is used as a bolt hole by drug dealers and other antisocial elements. The fact that we have been calling for this alleyway to be closed for six years speaks volumes for the effectiveness of the two county councillors for the area - New Labour's Val Smith and Barbara Gatehouse.  more...

Army rivalry

In answer to reader C Buckingham (Oxford Mail, January 9), there has always been light-hearted rivalry about the seniority of the Coldstream Guards and the Grenadier Regiment.  more...

Great start

Sir - You ran a story on Thames Valley Police's dismal crime clear-up rate of 25 pe rcent. Chief Constable Sara Thornton was quoted as saying that detection rates in Oxfordshire were comparatively low last year because police were chasing serious crimes rather than focusing on simpler cases'.  more...

Running down leisure sites

Sir - I was pleased to see an advert for a post to lead a preventative project aimed at tackling childhood obesity, (January 4).  more...

Will city strangle itself?

Sir - Much has been made in your columns of the removal of mature trees from Bonn Square as part of its current makeover. A less criticised feature has been the illusory depiction in the architects' impressions of a wide open space from New Inn Hall Street to the gates of the Westgate Centre.  more...

Tree-free Oxford

Sir - Following the high-profile tree-felling in Bonn Square, the culling at Osney, the big plane outside Boswell's, and the beginnings of the new Westgate, it is now clear that our enlightened city council has a previously unannounced policy of replacing old-fashioned and oversized trees with clean concrete and dainty modern treelets.  more...

Improved view

Sir - Am I alone in thinking the appearance of Bonn Square has been improved by the removal of the sycamores blocking the view of the New Road Baptist Church from the top of St Ebbe's.  more...

Bad mistake

Sir - I agree with Martin Thomas's views on the unfortunate and unnecessary abolition of Oxford's Middle Schools (Letters, January 25).  more...

Unconvincing efforts

Sir - I hope we do not have a repeat of the problems created by alternate weekly collections (AWCs) in Oxford, with the proposals for a waste plant just outside Oxford.  more...

Parking problems

Sir - Rev Peter Doll has problems with parking for churchgoers at his church in Abingdon. (Report, January 18.) On Tuesday, January 15, I attended a funeral at All Saints Church, Lime Walk, Headington.  more...

Correct injustice

Sir - In response to the letter from Bernard Greenberg (January 25) I can add further information about the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at the old East Kirkby airfield. This was home to both 57 and 630 Squadrons operating Lancaster aircraft from mid-to-late 1944 to the end of the Second World War. I was on 630 from December 43 to end of May 44. Fred and Harold Panton have created this wonderful living memorial as their own personal tribute in memory of their older brother, Christopher.  more...

Undiscovered jewel

Sir - In common with most people I've spoken to (those who knew the book and those who didn't) I found the first episode of the BBC drama series Lark Rise to Candleford very enjoyable (if a bit 'frothy'), even though it had little to do with the actual book.  more...

Arousing exhibition

Sir - I write to congratulate Andrew Nairne and his team on the stimulating Oxford Open exhibition that they have on show now at Modern Art Oxford.  more...
